Application Process (Step-By-Step)

Step By Step (From Start To Finish)
Once you are interested in applying for a Sworn or Non-Sworn position with the Kansas City Missouri Police Department, here is what you need to do and what will happen during the application process:
Review Available Jobs
The first (1st) step you will take is to view the position you are interested in applying for. This can be done by select "Jobs" from the navigation menu above, or clicking here: Jobs.
Knowledge of Required Documentation
Once you have decided which position you are interested in, the next step (#2) is to review the Employment Application Checklist so that you are aware of what documents you will need to complete your application process.
Register/Sign Up
Once you are ready to begin the application process, select Register from the navigation menu. To register, all you need to provide is a username, a valid email, and a password. When entering your email, you will need to enter it twice before submiting your information, to confirm you are sure of the password you have selected. Once you are ready, select "Submit" and you will receive a confirmation on the screen stating you have been registered. You will then receive a confirmation email at the email you provided during registration. You must check this email to retrieve your registration/verification code. This code is needed in order for you to log into your account for the first time. Without the verification code we sent to your email, you will not be able to login and therefore will not be able to complete the application process. Once you have your verification code, you can select Login from the navigation menu to log into your account.
Login
Once you arrive at the Login page, you will then enter your chosen username and password and submit the form. If this is your first time logging in, you will be notified that you must enter your verification code (the one you retrieved from the email we sent you during registration). Click "OK" in the notification box and you will be forwarded to a login page that also includes a verification code entry box. Enter your username, password and verification code in this form and you will be logged in. Note: the verification code is only needed the first time you log into your account. From this point on, you will login using only your username and password.
Tell Us About Your Veteran Status
Sworn and Non-Sworn Positions: Once you are logged in for the first time, you will be required to let us know if you are a veteran or not. Just select yes or no and move on to the "Choose Your Job" tab.
Choose Your Job
Sworn and Non-Sworn Positions: After you have entered your veteran status, you will now select the job you want to apply for from the dropdown menu. Click Submit!

Sworn Positions: After you submit your veteran status and chosen job, applicants applying for Sworn positions will be prompted to let us know if you are applying as a Lateral transfer. Select yes or no and then submit the form. If you are applying for a Non-Sworn position, you will not see this form and therefore will move directly to the next step.
Note: At this point you will have approximately 15 tasks to complete the KCPD Application process. These tasks will appear one at a time, so that you can complete them in chronological order. There will be a progress bar at the top of the page, which will increase from 0%-100% with each task you complete. The first task that will appear is the "Substance Abuse Form", which will display a link to open this document for completion. Once complete, you will be notified if you are approved to move on to the next step or not, depending on you responses. You can check your "Inbox" from the left menu to see the resulting message after completion of this form. The form will not automatically disqualify you, but could determine that you be placed in a hold status for further review. Your dashboard will reflect the results immediatley after you complete this form. If it is determined that you will be placed in a hold status, one of our staff members will be in touch after they have reviewed the form and you will be notified of either a clearnce or disqualification. If cleared immediately after you complete the form, the Application For Employment form will then appear on your dashboard so that you can proceed. Once complete, the Authorization For release Information Form will appear as well, for you to complete. All tasks after these three forms are filled out will appear one by one as you complete each and will be manually set to complete or incomplete by our staff, which will govern new tasks to show on your dashboard or task that still need to be completed. Once you have completed all tasks and a conditional job offer has been made and accepted, you will be placed in a Ready state, awaiting your start date. below is a description of each form and task item needing to be completed.
Substance Abuse Form
Sworn and Non-Sworn Positions: As previously mentioned, the initial form that will appear is the Substance Abuse Form. The Applicant will begin here, completing this form and receiving immediate results as to whether or not the applicant can proceed or is to be placed in a hold or "Under review" status. Once the applicant is cleared to proceed, a new link will appear, allowing the applicant to begin completing the Application For Employment.
Application For Employment
Sworn and Non-Sworn Positions: The Applicant will complete the Application for Employment. Once complete a new link will appear so that the Applicant can complete the Authorization For Release of Information form.
Authorization For Release of Information
Sworn and Non-Sworn Positions: The Applicant will complete the Authorization For Release Of Information form. Once complete, the sworn applicant will select a date to participate in the written examination and physical abilities testing. The Non-Sworn applicant will then given instruction as to what type of testing, if any, is required to move on in the process. The Non-Sworn applicant will either be contacted by phone, email, or through the internal private messaging system located in thier inbox.
Written Examination
Sworn Positions: applicants begin with and must take the Entry Level Police Officer Exam, which is administered by the Kansas City Missouri Police Department. Applicants are notified of the date, time and location of the test date beforehand.
Non-Sworn Positions: applicants may be required to take numerous tests related to the potions they are applying for (i.e. typing test, etc...)
Physical Abilities Test / Unit Specific Testing
Sworn Positions: The physical abilities test is an obstacle course designed to simulate challenges that could be encountered during an officer’s tour of duty. Applicants must demonstrate their ability to maneuver through the course with minimal errors. The physical abilities course is administered following the P.O.S.T.
Non-Sworn Positions: applicants may be required to take Unit Specific Tests, which are directly related to the position they are applying for. This would include tests beyond basic skills and would be administered by the Unit you are applying to.
Pre-Employment Polygraph Examination
Sworn and Non-Sworn Positions: Qualified applicants may proceed to the polygraph examination, which is administered by a qualified Polygraph Examiner. This test will cover criminal activity, drug usage, integrity, truthfulness and employment history.
Background Investigation
Sworn and Non-Sworn Positions: The background investigation will cover pertinent facts regarding the applicant’s character, work history and any criminal or traffic records.
Ride-Along
Sworn Positions: During the background investigation, the applicant will be required to ride with a Kansas City Missouri Police Officer on a weekend for a full tour of duty during the evening or night shift. This experience will expose the applicant to the actual duties performed by Kansas City Missouri Police Officers.
Oral Board
Sworn Positions: This is an interview conducted before the members of the Employment Section. The interview will consist of relevant questions designed to allow the Kansas City Missouri Police Department the opportunity to assess an applicant’s overall abilities as they relate to the field of law enforcement and/or official employmentt with the KCPD.
Psychological Examination
Sworn and Non-Sworn Positions: This interview is conducted by a certified psychologist, after a job offer has been made.
Physical Examination
Sworn and Non-Sworn Positions: Applicant’s will undergo a complete medical and eye examination performed by a licensed physician, after a job offer has been made.
Note: Many factors affect the expected duration of the hiring process. Completing the entire process may take several months. Applicants who successfully complete each phase of the hiring process are placed in an eligibility pool.
